2019: Our Initiatives for Nourishing a Better World

Each of our initiatives has been aimed at nourishing a better world

A year of efforts is reflected in each day

It is impossible to finish a year and not reflect on the events and actions carried out; we value what has enabled us to grow, learn and improve, and this experience makes us even stronger in 2020.

We care for the planet in order to nourish a better present and future.

At Grupo Bimbo, we strive to run our operations while minimizing the impact on the environment, thereby protecting the planet for both current and future generations.

In 2019 we introduced our #WithoutLeavingATrace campaign to enhance our Comprehensive Waste Management strategy with a clear goal: for 100% of our packaging to be sustainable by 2025.

With this in mind we launched the first 100% compostable bread packaging in Mexico for our brand Vital Bread. This packaging can be disposed of as domestic composting since it decomposes naturally without affecting the environment.

In addition, we support renewable energy. That's why we launched the upgraded version of our electric vehicle, the VDT3, which helps us to put delicious and nutritious baked goods and snacks in the hands of all without leaving a trace on the environment. Thanks to these initiatives, we have the largest electric fleet in Mexico and one of the largest in Latin America. And all these vehicles are wind powered: their batteries are recharged using clean energy generated by the Piedra Larga wind farm located in Oaxaca, Mexico.

We made an agreement with the Santa Rita East wind farm in Texas to generate energy for us. As a result, in 2020 Grupo Bimbo will become the first baking company in the United States to use 100% renewable  energy.

Moreover, our belief in making greater use of renewable energy led us to install the largest solar roof in South America. This facility in Chile adds to the 71 systems of this type that we already have around the world.

Likewise, one of the most important projects we developed last year is the Sustainable Corn project undertaken in concert with the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT), which helped small farmers in the Mezquital Valley in Hidalgo to increase the quality of their production and facilitate their inclusion in the supply chain.

These and many other initiatives prompted Baking & Snack, a leading publication in the food sector, to present us with its first Sustainability Award. This award recognizes our strategy for protecting the environment, promoting healthy lifestyles, putting our associates at the heart of our philosophy, as well as encouraging development in the communities where we operate.

Associates, values and productivity always go hand in hand

We know that giving our best in our value chain translates into creating quality products and achieving our best would not be possible without one essential ingredient: our associates. Thanks to their efforts, integrity, will and dedication, we remain the world’s largest baking company, putting our associates at the heart of our philosophy.

Together we collaborate following our golden rule: justice, respect, trust and care, both internally and externally. Our mindset is affirmed by the recognition we received in 2019. We were honored for the third consecutive year as one of the World’s Most Ethical Companies according to The Ethisphere Institute; as the company with the best reputation in Mexico, according to the Corporate Reputation Business Monitor (Merco); and the magazine Expansión places us in the top 500 Most Important Companies in Mexico. All this motivates us to continue working with integrity and according to our values.

Supporting our communities

Like we do every year, we have carried out several projects to promote well-being, interaction and healthy lifestyles. Among them is Futbolito Bimbo, which in this last edition saw the participation of over 89 thousand girls and boys from different schools throughout the country; and the Global Energy Race, in which over 118 thousand people raced with a cause, through which we donated two slices of bread for every kilometer run, adding up to a total of 1.5 million slices of bread given to food banks throughout the world.

Thanks to the Good Neighbor program, last year we continued supporting the communities where we are present, carrying out projects such as the reforestation of green spaces, the restoration of public spaces, or the construction of facilities in the surrounding areas where we operate.

In addition, we partnered with other organizations on initiatives such as Reforestamos México, Reciclamanía, and Limpiemos México.  Each one of them was focused on protecting the environment and improving the communities. For this, volunteer work was essential in carrying them out successfully.

Looking forward into 2020

We used every day in 2019 to improve and this will remain this way. The goal that we have now set for 2020 is to continue innovating, while strengthening our operations and value chain together with our associates and the communities that surround us to continue building a sustainable, highly productive and deeply humane company.
