Grupo Bimbo Develops, Manufactures and Delivers Over 170 Thousand Face Shields for the Pandemic

Together we will get through this

Keeping in mind the importance of protecting those that are on the frontline at hospitals and helping to supply them with preventive resources during this emergency, at Grupo Bimbo we engaged our collective creativity to design and manufacture internally in record time 170,000 face shields, which we are already donating to medical personnel throughout the country.

The shield, made from PET and PVC, helps those who are caring for patients with COVID-19 to protect themselves, because the use of masks, the use of face shields and frequent hand washing substantially reduce the possibility of infection.  In addition, the material with which they are made is easy to disinfect and sanitize with soap and water, as well as alcohol.

The effectiveness and use of face shields as a measure for the prevention of infection has been analyzed by different specialists, who have disclosed their findings. For example, according to JAMA, the Journal of the American Medical Association, face shields reduce immediate viral exposure by 96% when used by healthcare workers.

In addition, they ensure that face masks offer a range of benefits, such as durability; easy cleaning with soap and water; they are comfortable and protect the viral entry portals, and consequently reduce the potential for self-infection by preventing users from touching their faces.

The prototype, developed by the Grupo Bimbo Division of Technological Development, the unit dedicated to innovation, was created in record time. And just three days after the idea arose, the first batch was ready to be delivered.

The idea was suggested by the office of the Executive Vice President, which requested a fast and effective solution for associates as well as other groups of people on the front line and provided its full support from the very start.

All of these efforts were possible due to four fundamental characteristics of all the associates who have participated in the creation, development and operation:

1. Work with a dynamic culture

2. Collective intelligence

3. Commitment

4. Passion.

At Grupo Bimbo we are reiterating our commitment to our people, to the healthcare workers and to society in general, again doing our part in order to cope with COVID-19 together.
