Corn has been present in our country from the start and is a part of the lives of all Mexicans

What is corn for Grupo Bimbo? For us, it’s more than a resource and a product that is cultivated; to us, it is life itself. It is part of Mexico’s history, as well as ours as a bakery. It is the staple and source from which countless foods are made that make up a better world.

On September 29, Corn Day is celebrated throughout Mexico, and we at Grupo Bimbo want to highlight its importance in our work. Without it, we wouldn’t have the flour that makes it possible for so many of our products to reach families across the entire planet. In addition to its versatility, it is a beneficial ingredient for our health; including it in our diet provides us with both carbohydrates and antioxidants.

With all of these important benefits, we at Grupo Bimbo have promoted various projects to produce corn with the highest quality standards. To do so, we work with organizations such as the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT).

One of our most important projects with this association is Sustainable Corn, a supply initiative that has enabled the development of its production using new technologies while protecting the environment.

The primary objective of this project is to promote the production of white corn (the basis for some of our flours) through a technique called Conservation Agriculture or Sustainable Agriculture, which takes full advantage of resources (such as water and other nutrients), rotates crops and reduces movement of the soil (tillage).

In addition to protecting the planet, this practice has demonstrated its benefits from the very start. Thanks to Sustainable Corn, we are able to save over 109,000 liters of water per ton and we are increasing the production levels by at least 16% in just one single operational cycle, according to data from the CIMMYT.

In addition to these positive results, at Grupo Bimbo we are always working to go one step further. In addition to protecting the planet, we want benefits for all of society; for this reason, Sustainable Corn began in the Mezquital Valley region in the state of Hidalgo, which is an area with limited resources that has benefited from the project.

Grupo Bimbo and CIMMYT saw the potential that existed for this community made up mostly of farmers if we worked together for the benefit of everyone. The integrated system helped small farmers increase the quality of their production and facilitate their inclusion in the supply chain to gradually expand in both volume and geographical regions.

This is just one of the many initiatives undertaken by Grupo Bimbo to Nourish a Better World. These types of initiatives are what help us to promote our philosophy as a sustainable, highly productive and deeply humane company.
