During the 3rd edition and relaunch of the ”Transporte Limpio” program, Grupo Bimbo was awarded by the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT), for its efforts in reducing the ecological footprint of its transport and distribution operations.

Grupo Bimbo’s Azcapotzalco plant was selected by SEMARNAT as the venue for the presentation of this year’s awards in recognition for the firm´s accomplishments since 2009, when it joined the program as founding member. The award ceremony was attended by the National Commission for the Efficient Use of Energy (CONUEE), the National Chamber of Freight Transport (CANACAR), the National Association of Private Transport (ANTP), the National Association of Producers of Buses, Trucks and Trailers (ANPACT) and the Director of the Clean Air Management Program of SEMARNAT.

The “Transporte Limpio” program encourages firms to develop a more efficient, competitive and environmentally friendly freight transport by means of measures aimed at reducing fuel consumption, emissions of greenhouse gases and operation costs. As of today, 137 firms participate in the program, which has evaluated 11,638 transport units and has prevented the emission of 824,000 tons of CO2.

As part of the event, the National Commission for the Efficient Use of Energy (CONUEE), the National Association of Producers of Buses, Trucks and Trailers (ANPACT) and the National Association of Private Transport (ANTP), subscribed a Coordination Agreement aimed at strengthening the “Transporte Limpio” Program. Also, founding and new members firms of the program, received awards.

Grupo Bimbo was awarded for its training program for operators in economizing driving, energy diagnoses, the use of lightweight materials, advanced lubricants and alternative fuels, such as natural gas. The firm was also recognized for having a fleet partly composed of hybrid and electrical vehicles. With its participation, the Group has reduced its CO2 emissions by 10,000 tons since it joined the program.

“Transporte Limpio is a program of voluntary membership in which many firms have joined, making a genuinely commitment with both the environment and the country. We are confident that the great work the Mexican government has been doing with this program will undoubtedly strengthen it, incentivizing more companies to commit with this commendable endeavor”, declared Reyes García.

With actions of this kind, Grupo Bimbo consolidates its commitment with sustainability and with the reduction of its ecological footprint while maintaining an active engagement with the government institutions involved with confronting the challenges presented to the transport industry, Fortino Reyes García concluded.
