In commemoration of the International Mother Earth Day promoted by the United Nations (UN), Grupo Bimbo announced the 2013 results of the actions undertaken in Mexico to reduce the environmental footprint of its operations in the field of electric power.
Alejandra Vázquez, Sustainability Manager at Grupo Bimbo, pointed out that the implementation of the Group’s best practices along all its organizations, allowed a decrease in heat energy consumption of over 36 thousand tons of CO2, equivalent to the capacity of absorption of 1 million trees.
The UN focused this year’s activities of the International Mother Earth Day on the promotion of “Green Cities”, with the objective of achieving a healthy and sustainable environment. In this context, the baking company was satisfied with the completion of the sustainable cycle of its operations with the opening of the first Ecologic Sales Center in Mexico City, thus collaborating with the city in the reduction of its carbon footprint and the appeasing of its mobility problem.
Both the Sales Center and the electric motor vehicles are powered by the energy generated in the Piedra Larga wind farm. Since its opening, sixteen months ago, Piedra Larga has prevented the emission of nearly 176 thousand tons of CO2, amount that is equivalent to the absorption capacity of 5 times the area of the Mexican National Park “La Marquesa”, located in the state of Mexico, or the annual consumption of electric energy of the metropolitan area of the city of San Luis Potosí, correspondent to 280 thousand homes of four-member families.
“Since its opening, Piedra Larga became the cornerstone of the firm’s environmental sustainability initiative. It is a flagship project that guarantees the self-supply of the electric energy we need in our daily operations in the country”, explained Alejandra Vázquez.
Together, the Ecologic Sales Center, the Piedra Larga Wind Farm, and the efforts and best practices aimed at reducing electric and heat energy consumption, have allowed the Group to reduce its CO2 emissions into the atmosphere by over 320 thousand tons in 2013, amount equivalent to 9 times the “La Marquesa” absorption capacity.
“Through our pillar Planet, the environmental branch of our social responsibility program Sembrando Juntos, we implement actions that have a positive impact on nature. We are convinced that in 2015, we will fulfill our goal of becoming a role model in terms of environmental sustainability”, concluded the executive.
