Mexico City, December 12, 2024. Grupo Bimbo, the world’s leading baking company, announced that it has surpassed its own record in the number of hectares within its regenerative agriculture program. Grupo Bimbo had set a goal of reaching 150,000 hectares by the end of its 2023 cycle under this program and managed to exceed that goal with a total of 170,000 hectares in countries such as Mexico, the United States, Canada, and France. This includes 7,000 hectares of corn and an increase of 163,000 hectares of wheat.
Regenerative agriculture is based on a series of practices that improve soil health, capture carbon, and protect the water cycle. This program aims to reduce soil erosion, increase biodiversity, and strengthen farming communities.
The company’s strategy, under its global Regenerative Agriculture framework, aims to improve soil health through practices that help manage water use more efficiently, enhance biodiversity, increase yield per hectare, and seek to reduce and capture greenhouse gas emissions, which contribute to global warming and climate change; all of this to ensure healthy soil that not only transforms agriculture but also guarantees a more sustainable global food system for future generations.
Additionally, Grupo Bimbo supports farmers in this transition by providing them with the knowledge and techniques necessary to care for soil health.
In Mexico, Grupo Bimbo’s regenerative agriculture program has made significant progress thanks to partnerships with suppliers and expert organizations, such as the collaboration with the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT). As a result, in 2023, 8,390 hectares of wheat were cultivated using regenerative agriculture techniques, which allowed for a 15% increase in water use productivity in irrigation compared to conventional practices, as well as a 50% reduction in CO2e emissions for 2023 compared to conventional agriculture practices. Similarly, more than 7,300 hectares of corn were cultivated with these sustainable practices, resulting in a 3% increase in water use productivity for irrigation compared to conventional practices, as well as an approximate 55% reduction in CO2e emissions for 2023 compared to conventional agriculture practices.
Other partnerships have simultaneously brought expert knowledge to various rural communities so that farmers can begin using regenerative agriculture practices, increase their productivity, and improve the well-being of their families.
In North America, through Grupo Bimbo’s regenerative agriculture project, more than 146,000 hectares of wheat have been planted using this technique. In the United States, 127,000 hectares have been registered, while in Canada, 19,000 hectares.
Alejandra Vázquez Langle, Global Sustainability Director, commented: “Grupo Bimbo is advancing in regenerative agriculture with a vision that combines sustainability with economic impact and social well-being. We are making great progress towards our 2050 goal of ensuring that 100% of our key ingredients come from lands cultivated with regenerative agriculture practices.”
