In 2015, the UN proposed 17 sustainable development goals to achieve by 2030, and it's no coincidence that number 5 is gender equality. Besides being a fundamental human right, closing social, economic, and labor gender gaps contributes to creating a healthier, fairer, and more sustainable planet.
We highlight three specific actions you can take in your daily routine to contribute to the growth of your colleagues:
1. Support and celebrate your colleagues' achievements
Public recognition: Congratulate your colleagues in team meetings or through internal messages when they achieve significant milestones.
Promote visibility: Provide them with opportunities to lead projects or presentations, thereby increasing their visibility within the organization.
Development support: Offer assistance and guidance in skill development and career advancement.
2. Promote an inclusive work environment
Advocate for diversity: Support hiring and promotion policies that encourage gender diversity in the organization.
Intervene in discrimination cases: Refrain from participating in sexist comments or actions. If you hear any comments that may diminish your colleagues, speak up!
3. Listen to and amplify female voices
Active listening: Pay attention to their opinions and suggestions in meetings and work discussions. Ask questions and show genuine interest in what they have to say.
Decision-making support: Advocate for inclusive decision-making, allowing women to influence them.
Avoid interruptions: Be aware of interruptions and "mansplaining" in conversations, and work to halt them.
*Mansplaining: Explanation a man gives to a woman in a condescending tone, unjustifiably assuming her lack of knowledge.
All of us need to be allies for gender equality. Take an active role by engaging in diversity and inclusion initiatives and conversations.
We can all be equitable!
